Protocol for the 'Beyond 50' prospective observational cohort study: investigating the impact of physical and psychosocial factors on healthy ageing

Why did we do this study?

As people move through their 50s and beyond, they often experience major life changes such as retirement, changes in family responsibilities, shifts in social relationships, and new health challenges. These experiences can affect physical health, mental wellbeing, and overall quality of life. The Beyond 50 Study was established to better understand how these factors influence healthy ageing, with a particular focus on physical health, mental health, social connectedness, and alcohol and other substance use.

How was the study conducted?

The Beyond 50 Study recruited more than 1,000 adults aged 50–70 years from the Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula Local Government Areas in Victoria. Participants complete annual surveys about their health, wellbeing, lifestyle, and social connections. Some participants also take part in interviews that provide a deeper understanding of their experiences during important life transitions. The study also links survey information with healthcare data to better understand health outcomes over time.

What have we found?

This publication is a study protocol, which means it describes the study design and methods rather than reporting final results. The paper outlines how researchers will follow participants over several years to identify factors that support healthy ageing and factors that may increase the risk of poorer health and wellbeing.

Why is this important?

Australia's population is ageing, making it increasingly important to understand how people can maintain good health, independence, and social connection later in life. Findings from the Beyond 50 Study will help inform programs, services, and policies that support healthy ageing. The knowledge gained may also help communities and healthcare providers better respond to the needs of older adults and support positive ageing for future generations.

The Beyond 50 Study would not be possible without the valuable contribution of participants who generously share their time and experiences.
